Eyegasm Tutorial Step 1

Hey folks. After a long time of pstuts abstinence here comes a new tut that deals with photomanipulation. There have been many requests concerning the manipulation of eyes. So here we go with this new lesson. It’s straight, simple and clear.

Download this file or use your own eye. Note: This is my Eye and my shot. You are not authorized to use this shot in your artworks. It’s not a stock-photo. It’s just for the lesson.

Open the file eyegasmoriginal.jpg with Photoshop. I use Photoshop 7. First of all copy the layer1 by right-clicking on it. Choose Dublicate Layer. (Alternative way: Left click on the Layer1 and go to Layer-Dublicate Layer)

Because we are perfectionists J we’ll also edit the color of the surface. Go to Image-Adjustments-Levels (shortkey = CTRL+L) Watch my settings on the right.

Furthermore we’ve to adjust the colors. Go to Image-Adjustments-Color Balance. (shortkey = CTRL+B). Tone Balance = Shadows (-4, +8,- 13) II Tone Balance = Midtones (+4, +3,- 6) II Tone Balance = Highlights (-3, +7,- 4). Well just a few difference to the Original piece. But believe me those very small edits are the key to perfection! J

Now we will delete all the scratches and dust segments on the surface. Horay there are very few! But there is one dirty black spot on the left lower part of the image. Now take your Patch Tool (one of the most powerful weapons of PS7) It’s important that you choose Patch=Source.

Make a selection around the dirty spot. Now look for a part of the surface that is clean and nice. Now pull the active selection to this clean place and release the left mouse button. You’ll see that the dirty spot was replaced by the very clean part of the skin. Do that as much as you feel like. Search for dirty places on someones face and delete them with the described method.

And now please be careful. We want to Highlight the picture in the area of the eye. But not to much. If you are not satisfied with your result just go a step back in your History Palette. If you can’t see the History Palette go to Window-History.

Paint over the Iris in order to cover the whole visible eye. The work is done now comes the fun part. Change the Blend Mode of your “Color” Layer to Color Burn. After that just try the many different Blending Modes. Maybe change the Color to Blue and do the same again. Have fun.
